Technical Coaching Director: Matt Shubin

Matt has experience playing and coaching at the highest levels.   In 2000 he led Pierce Junior College to a 19-0 record and a state championship.   At UCLA he studied the game under the tutelage of Coach Al Scates, the most successful Coach in the history of Division I Collegiate Athletics (19 NCAA Championships).   After graduating from UCLA, Shubin continued his indoor playing career as a professional in Greece and Puerto Rico. Matt also has experience coaching at the international level.  In 2007 he coached the SCVA High Performance Boys team at the European Global Challenge in Maribor, Slovenia.

Shubin has a wealth of experience working with young athletes.   He has been a volleyball camp clinician at UCLA, LMU, and Pepperdine.  He has run the Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos Beach Volleyball Camps which had over 100 campers weekly.   Matt has coached a top 18s and 13s team for the Sports Shack Volleyball Club. In 2007 Shubin had the privilege of coaching 200 Orange and Blue Campers, the largest group the West Hills has ever seen.

From 2005-2006, Shubin coached the Palisades High School Varsity Girls Volleyball Team.  In 2006 he led the Dolphins to a league championship and advanced to the city-section semi-finals.
In 2007 Matt Shubin took the helm as the Varsity Girls Volleyball Coach at Chaminade College Preparatory. He led the Lady Eagles to their first playoff birth in 15 years.
In the summer of 2008 Matt was named head coach of the Southern California Volleyball Association Select National Team, a collection of the region's top girl's players.  Under his direction the Southern California Girls went undefeated to win the Gold Medal at the USA High Performance Championships in Tuscon, Arizona.

In October of 2008, Shubin was chosen for the Top Men's Assistant position at Cal State University Northridge. He served as director of recruiting and operations in addition to his coaching responsibilities.  Shubin helped lead the Matadors to a 24-7 overall record and a Division I #1 national ranking, the only CSUN athletics team to ever accomplish that feat in the history of the school.

In the summer of 2009 Shubin founded Club Beach, the first Juniors Beach Volleyball Tour for club players.

In 2010 Shubin was named to the AVCA's 30 UNDER 30 AWARD list honoring the nation's top up and coming coaches.

Matt Shubin holds a Cap Coaching Accredidation and is a Gold Medal Squared Certified Coach.


Strength & Conditioning Coach: George Roumain

George Roumain or "Big George" as he is fondly known by his opponents and friends is one of the biggest names in the volleyball world.

In 2004, Roumain, along with partner Jason Ring, captured their first AVP tournament title at the Huntington Beach Open. Roumain started competing on the beach after dominating indoor volleyball at International level. He was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1999-2000 and named 2000 United States Olympic Male Volleyball Athlete of the Year.

Roumain has also been credited as a member of Volleyball Magazine's All Century Team.

He was a three-time All American at Pepperdine where he graduated from with a degree in marketing.  Roumain was also twice named NCAA Player of the Year, and led Pepperdine to the championship match of the 1998 NCAA Tournament.

George is a strength and conditioning coach and posture alignment therapist for professional athletes and high level collegiate/prep players. He is a certified personal trainer who is in the process of completing his CSCS credentials, the gold standard in the industry.

George fell in love with surfing in fifth grade and is in the water any chance he gets.   He currently resides in Thousand Oaks with his lovely wife Kimmie.


Middle Blocking Coach: Jessica Swarbrick

Jessica was born in San Jose, Calif., to Teresa and Stephen Swarbrick ...has four siblings, including brothers Jared and Jordan and sisters Jennifer and Jacqueline.

As a senior prep player Jessica ranked 21st nationally among the prep class of 2005 by PrepVolleyball.com and was a Volleyball Monthly Fab 50 selection.

In 2005 Jessica led the Huskes to an NCAA DI National Championship. As a collegiate palyer she was a Three-time All-American, Three-time First Team All Pac-10, 2008 Pac 10 Player of The Week, and Leader in Hitting Percentage. In 2008 Jessica continued her volleyball career playing professionally in Spain.

Jessica brings a wealth of knowledge as a coach. She has learned from the best in Coach McLaughlin who is one of the nations most respected coaches. Coach Mcglaughlin was named the National Coach of the Year and has received the Pacific Region and Pac-10 Coach of the Year awards.  In addition to coaching at the club level Jessica has run many successful clinics including an online video tutorial for maxpreps.com.


Setting Coach: Jeff Baxter
Jeff_Baxter Jeff is currently a senior at Cal State University Northridge. He Has helped lead the Matadors to a top four National Division I ranking for the last two years in a row.

Jeff Lettered all four years as a setter at Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif. ... earned All-Marmonte League honors following his junior (2005) and senior (2006) seasons ... was a four-time team MVP and four-year starter (2003-06) ... played for coach Travis Ferguson, who was a setter at Cal State Northridge in 1995.

Jeff was Born March 23, 1988 in Woodland Hills, Calif. ... parents are Karen and John Baxter ... has two brothers, John and Kevin ... John was a setter at Northridge from 1998-2001 who ranks second on the Matador career assists list ... Kevin attends Cal Lutheran ... favorites include the New England Patriots, athletes Tom Brady and Kobe Bryant, "Seinfeld", the movies "Dumb and Dumber" and the "Karate Kid" and Will Smith ... once met Cincinnati Bengal receiver Chad Johnson ... major is Kinesiology.

This is Jeff's second year coaching at Achieve.

 

17-Roxy: Shawn Farrell

Shawn played his prep volleyball at Royal High School and Classic VBC.

Shawn went on to play Collegiately at Moorpark College.

Shawn has been coaching at the club level for years. He has coached for Classic Volleyball Club working with both boys and girls at the 14s, 15s, and 16s level.

Shawn got his start in the Collegiate coaching ranks working under Coach Burkhart who has won numerous state titles with the Moorpark College Women’s program.

This is Shawn's second season with Achieve.


16-Roxy: Theo Edwards

Theo is a Senior on the volleyball team at Cal State University Northridge. He has been a huge contributor for the matadors on and off the court.

Born May 17, 1987 in Woodland Hills, Calif. ... mother is Gretchen Edwards-Gordon and stepfather is Kelsey Gordon ... has one older brother, Ian ... favorites include the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers' Shaquille O'Neal ... favorite TV show is "Entourage" and favorite movie is "Training Day" ... once met actor Denzel Washington ... says the best thing about being an athlete is "being a role model to kids" ... major is Urban Studies.

Theo is star coach on the rise.  He is a triple threat.  He knows the game inside and out, he is a great teacher and he has unparalleled enthusiasm in the gym.

This is Theo' s first year coaching with Achieve.

15-Roxy: Summer Plante-Newman

One of the most accomplished volleyball players in Cal Lutheran history. In 2009 Summer Plante-Newman joined the Cal Luther coaching staff serving as Graduate Assistant.

The former outside hitter helped guide the Regals to a West Region Semifinal appearance in 2009 in her first season on the staff.

Her accolades include 2008-09 Ventura County Female College AOY and Cal Lutheran Scholar AOY. A four-time all-SCIAC, three-time first team selection ('06, '07, '08) and SCIAC freshman of the year ('05).

Plante-Newman was also named NCAA all-West region first team and all-American selection in 2007.

In the spring of 2009 she graduate with a degree in liberal studies with emphasis in exercise science and sports movement while minoring in art.

In her spare time Summer enjoys beach volleyball, surfing, spending time with her family, reading the Bible and learning sign language.
In the spring of 2009 she graduated with her bachelors degree in liberal studies with emphasis an in exercise science and sports medicine while minoring in art. She is currently working toward her Education Specialist Credential from Cal Lutheran as well as her masters degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University.
14-Roxy: Anna Cota
anna2 Played Outside Hitter for Cal State University Northridge from 1984-87, national runner up during Freshman, Sophmore and Junior Seasons.  As a senior Led the Lady Matadors to a DII National Championship.

After graduating Anna took the Graduate Assistant position at CSUN coaching under renowned coach Walt Ker.

Anna has coached at the high school level for Alemany, Louisville and Simi High.  She has also had tremendous success at the club level coaching 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s, and 18s levels for Pacific and Achieve.

Anna is Married to Henry.  They have 3 kids Carly, Camden and Caitlyn. Favorite shows are house and sports
center.  Resides in Simi Valley.  When not watching kids play sports family likes to enjoy the outdoors camping.

This is Anna's second year coaching at Achieve.



13-Roxy: Jessie Webster

Jesse grew up in the South Bay area (Redondo and Manhattan Beach) and learned to play volleyball at the age of 13.  He played both volleyball and basketball for Redondo Union High School (1995-99).  As a senior he led Redondo to an Ocean League Championship and runner-ups to the CIF Championships.  A First Team All CIF in 1998 and 1999, First Team Ocean League 1998 and 1999, and Second Team Ocean League in 1997.  Still hold the school records for kills in a match (38), blocks in a match (24) and serving aces (season and game).  Played Club for SMBC.  

Growing up in the South Bay, Jesse was heavily involved in beach volleyball.  During the 2003 season, he was the top ranked player in AAA and Open levels in the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA).  Played in the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) from 2000-2008 and was nationally ranked in top 100.

In 2000 Jesse became the head coach for the Girls Varsity team at Rolling Hills Prep High School(coached from 2000-03).   Jesse coached for the Girls and Boys Programs at Peninsula High School during the 2003 season.  Head of Simi High Schools Boys program in 2010. Upon moving to Simi Valley, he coached the 16 Boys’ Spectrum Club and with Achieve.

Jesse Webster recently moved to Simi Valley with my wife, Sara, and our two-year old son, Griffin.
